A
Ambush
slang
A derogatory term for anyone who rips off a service from another who has already obtained it, such as shooting a bounty hunter to steal an already-caught criminal in their possession, or taking out a transporter truck to hijack the supplies inside and deliver it themselves to collect the fee.

B
Bank
slang, location
Generally the bank - a slang for a check-in station.
see also Check-in Station, Bounty Booth
Beefeater
slang
A slang, generally an insult, for anyone who is obscenely rich or more well-off than the commonwealth. On the mainland where food and supplies are transported in, it is extremely expensive to bring in cuts of meat of any sort, the most costly being beef due to the rarity of cows on the inland farms, hence, a beefeater is anyone who can afford this commodity.
Blue-Collar
slang, occupation
Your general average worker - anyone who works in the factory district, unloading at the wharf, or any other menial labor job.
see also Working Class
Bounty Booth
slang, location
A slang term for a check-in station.
see also Check-In Station, Bank
Bounty Hunter
occupation
Anyone who makes their main or partial income off of the capture and turn-in of wanted individuals as specified by LOCK Radio.
see also Red-Collar
Bounty Mix
noun
A food item, very easy to eat on the go, and thus typically consumed by bounty hunters on the trail of a kill. All it consists of are shreds of dried meat, ration cracker crumbles and nuts tossed together in a paper bag.
C
Candy Shack
slang, location
A place where a prostitute can be picked up.
Card
noun
The main currency, as supplied by LOCK upon the turn-in of a bounty. These paper cards are manufactured in an area where electricity is available and fairly easy to control, a very rare thing in the current times. Hence, very faintly electrified metal flecks are pressed into the paper fibers of these recycled material cards, rendering them slightly magnified. This process makes them near impossible to counterfeit by the general populace, which does not have access to areas with harnessed electricity. Merchants can check the validity of cards by running them over a small box of metal shavings, typically with a clear, plastic top. If the shavings move or react to the magnetism, the card is good. As cards can only be obtained at check-in stations, and is the main currency, it would be an accurate statement to say the economy truly is fueled by the bounty-hunting system.
see also Magnet
Card Check
noun
This is the small box of metal shavings that merchants use to check the validity of cards. Since cards are slightly magnetized, if the metal shavings shake or move in the box when the card is passed over it, you know the card is valid and not counterfeit.

Chauffeur
slang, occupation
A slang term for a transporter.
see also Transporter
Check-In Station
location
One of multiple shack-like booths established by LOCK as a place to turn in the bounties caught. They generally sport a front counter, operating radio, and then a holding cell area concealed in the back - it's like the bastard child of a sandwich stand and a drunk tank. The teller who works the front counter can contact the main LOCK compound when bounties are brought in to get them transported to a permanent cell there, as well as hand out the specified card as reward. It should be noted that only Level Green through Level Orange can be brought to a check-in station. Level Reds need to be brought straight to the compound.

Copy-cat
slang
A derogatory term for anyone who rips off a service from another who has already obtained it, such as shooting a bounty hunter to steal an already-caught criminal in their possession, or taking out a transporter truck to hijack the supplies inside and deliver it themselves to collect the fee.

D
Dame
slang, occupation
An affectionate term for a prostitute. Because of the large amount of prostitutes in the San Francisco area, it is an extremely non-offensive term, that can even be carried over in very rough slang to women without any prostitute background in the same way as words like baby, doll, sweetheart, etc.
see also Prostitute, Ninety-Fiver
Deadeye
proper noun
Deadeye is the name of a very infamous Bounty Hunter, prominent in San Francisco in the earliest days of the LOCK bounty system. His reputation was earned by bagging the most Level Red bounties of anyone in the city's history, and doing so without ever suffering considerable self-harm. He has disappeared from the public eye in the past 5 years, most considering him to be dead.
Diamond Heights
location
This area mostly falls along the middle of San Francisco, deviating towards the south and often considered as just 'the south' as anything further down is completely void of residence. It is almost treated as a separate city from the northern areas, controlled by a rather rich heiress, Charlotte Dupree (now known as Queen Charlotte) who used her money and influence to build this territory and position herself as its ruler. Diamond Heights not only sports a base of operations, but a full military force of trained (and well-armed) gunmen. With a guarantee of nice living conditions, plenty of food, water, and comfort for them and their families, it's easy to want to go join the ranks there. There is also a multitude of shops, and business is very good all along the area. It is also right near the Factory District, so new supplies are just a call away. The opinion of it in the northern areas is split, some envying the lifestyle there, and others loathing it and finding it elitist.
Discontinuants
noun
A group of religious extremists contained within the Sanctuary and necessitating the Sanctuary Guard, they are not the most popular people in the city, to say the least. After the explosions fifteen years ago, they have come to believe that - seeing as no other explanation has ever been offered - it truly WAS a failed Apocalypse on the behalf of God. As far as they're concerned, the human race is over, and should just simply submit, lay down, and die. You would think a group like this would be pro-suicide, but they still feel it to be a sin. Therefore, they are content to just wait it out until they either drop dead, or are killed. There is a group, known as the Evolutionaries, which strongly oppose the Discontinuants and cause the main brunt of the problems within the Sanctuary.
Doctor
slang, occupation
A term for a drug-dealer.
see also Gardener
Dragtown
location
This is the nickname given to the area just north of Diamond Heights and just south of the Wharf. It is a collection of mostly decimated buildings and apartments, rattled by even the smallest of coastline storms, and used primarily as residency for the poorer inhabitants of the island. More poor, unnamed saps die on these backalleys than almost any place else, save for Turkwest. Lynchings and even hangings are still common in the slums, as well as gun fights, knife fights, and all other manner of murders. However, it does have its places of interest, including a vast slum market where you can buy almost anything under the smog for far cheaper than anyplace else, the wonderfully infamous Nonpareil on its outskirts, and nearly the entirety of the main entrances into the Sanctuary.
Dry Kill
slang
Any kill or murder not done for a bounty.
see also Freebie, Taking Pity
E
Entrepeneur
occupation
An entrepeneur is generally classified as anyone who is not in the working class blue-collar, or the bounty hunter red-collar, but it's a little more specialized than that, and can come in many forms. Perhaps they are the well-oiled mind behind new factory equipment, working in direct contact with the overseer, or perhaps they are the owner of a non-production-related establishment, such as a bar or even one of the market shops or stands. However this field also includes independent drug-dealers, pimps (which run rampant in Francisco, as do the prostitutes), and other "unsavory" independent businessmen. There are, of course, different levels of entrepeneur. A drug-dealer can either be a tiny street corner dealer who still puts in his 9 to 5 at the dockyard working under a big-time supplier, or an underground tycoon with thousands in drug money and a web of customers spanning the city. A pimp can either constitute some poor sap who rents out his girlfriend for a night, or a swanky overlord with an army of buxom women and a towering bordello to store them in. Needless to say, whether they be the man behind the counter of a smoke-filled pub or the man collecting your money for an exchange of cocaine, entrepeneurs are a cushy alternative to bounty hunter or factory worker, if you have the business sense.
Evolutionaries
noun
A group of extremists who have formed purely to protest the Discontinuants inside the Sanctuary. They believe the complete opposite of the group they are constantly trying to destroy - that humans should go on living, being that they are still the dominant species on the planet. The fact they want nothing more than the death of the Discontinuants, and will take actual violent means to do-so themselves, makes the entire situation deliciously hypocritical. However, due to the fact that there are innocents also living in the Sanctuary, the Sanctuary Guard has been established out of concerned vigilante citizens to protect those in the tunnels by directly combatting attacks from the Evolutionaries.
F
Factory District
location
Factories are spread out throughout all of San Francisco, but there is an area bordering Diamond Heights to the east that epitomizes it known as the Factory District. Aside from brownish smoggy skies, the constant churn of equipment, and rumble of truck engines, it is fairly easy to deduct what goes on in such an area. Divided into three main places, the Kitchens, Munitions Stronghold and the Junkyard, different types of areas handle different types of production. This completely essential grouping of factories is paid off handsomely by Diamond Heights' officials so that they get first pick of all the goods, and personal delivery into their gated community, making it fair to say the tablescraps are scraped off the plate into the more northern and western areas.
see also Kitchen, Munitions Stronghold, Junkyard
Flora
slang
This is the street term for just about any kind of drug. Because running a lab or any kind of scientific outlet for things like methamphetamines is very difficult, the most popular kinds of drugs are those derived from plants, such as marijuana, cocaine and heroine. Therefore, if someone asks for flora, they are referring to a general need for some kind of drug.

Franklin Zone
slang, location
This refers to any area that has partial, sporadic, or controlled electricity. The only known area to have controlled electricity is in a small part of western San Francisco which is completely controlled and kept highly guarded by LOCK.
Freebie
slang
Any kill or murder not done for a bounty.

slang, occupation
This is slang for a drug-dealer, or someone who deals "flora."

Golden Grave
location
Golden Grave designates the area which was once the historic Golden Gate Bridge, a prominent string of rusty red arcs welcoming visitors into the city by the bay. Now all that remains are the shattered spikes of the supports, jutting out of the water in chaotic disarray, a reminder of the original blasts of O31.
Greenhouse
slang, location
This would be any place where drugs are either grown or obtained.
H
Hit a Pedestrian
slang
This refers to the accidental killing of someone when in pursuit of a bounty or some other form of justice. Hence, hitting a pedestrian would be shooting someone who is not involved or at least did not deserve to be shot. It is not to be confused with a dry kill, freebie or taking pity, which are meant to be used when an act is purposeful, where as to hit a pedestrian is to not mean for it to happen.
Holy Trinity
slang, occupation
You would call someone a Holy Trinity when they have a way of providing all three of the vices that can cause a bounty to be placed on you by LOCK aside from murder or any other crimes of violence or force - this means the distribution of drugs (marijuana, cocaine or heroine), trafficking of stolen goods or any service that has been ambushed or copy-catted, and extortion for protection.
I
Inlander
noun
The inlanders are those living on the mainland beyond the Obie, who still grow crops, raise livestock, and try to cultivate the barely-alive lands. They have incredibly hard lives, but are still probably happier than those in the city. LOCK has commissioned an entire group of guards and riflemen to protect them from those who would steal their wares before they make it to Market, although the job of safely getting their product there is the responsibility of the transporters.
J
Junkyard
location
The Junkyard, one of the three areas in the Factory District, handles all other miscellany, and while it is the largest of all the semi-organized factory districts, it's the toughest to work in, as not many places handle such odd assortments of grouped items.
see also Factory District
K
Kitchen
location
The Kitchen is one of the three areas of the Factory District, which strictly handles all types of food, beverage, and other edible pieces of retail. Not to say that it's one hundred percent clean, but it gets the job done, and keeps people fed with still semi-processed things. There is also a brewery on its grounds, because not many people would get far without beer, and it is difficult for people to produce independently with the state of barley and hops being what it is.

noun
This group is headed up by both workers and overseers of the Factory District. What is basically little more than a patch sewn into a grungy jumpsuit is meant to give
Level
noun
A system set up by LOCK radio to determine how much of a threat a particular bounty is. Level Black is the lowest, meaning they do not pose a threat to the greater population but are more of a nuisance to law and order, and they are preferably brought in alive to serve out a set term at the LOCK compound to be released back into society someday. Level Brown notes that they are armed and most likely dangerous, most likely having committed a murder in conjunction with another crime, normally labeled as wanted dead or alive. Level Orange is a known mass murderer, preferably brought in dead as they pose a serious threat to the populace. Finally, the highest and rarest level, the Level Red, which is someone who is directly threatening the system put in place by LOCK and needs to be terminated or brought specifically and directly to Lockdown. These are people who have directly corrupted the bounty hunting ways, and usually are labeled as the hunters of bounty hunters. Hence, they are very dangerous for a bounty hunter to go after, and only the best - most infamously Deadeye from the early years of the LOCK system - have succeeded repeatedly.
LOCK
noun
This is the organization which largely runs the city and keeps things at least looking to be a remnant of intelligently put-together human society... although it is still a far throw from such. Comprised originally of locals who wanted order, LOCK (the League Of Community Knowledge) quickly grew and began to take over in the days after the O31 tragedy. They were able to gain control, through force, of the Franklin zones and thusly oversee the return of factory activity and mass production of card. They also run two separate prisons, the general LOCK compound and the high security Lockdown, as well as the system that allows those jails to be filled up - LOCK radio and their bounty hunting system. Aside from having horrible repertoire with some residents, and having the impression of 'playing God', that seems to just be another unfortunate side effect of being the government representation, and overall, without LOCK there would be no economic flow whatsoever, and certainly no sense of community organization.
LOCK Compound
location
To the South of San Francisco, right along the newly formed water's edge is the LOCK compound, where Level Black through Level Orange bounties are held. A somewhat poorly held-up complex, it is typical for jailbreaks and other negligence to occur. Prisoners are not well cared for, and deaths, sickness and starvation inside are very common.
Lockdown
location
Formerly the infamous waterbound prison of Alcatraz, Lockdown is now home to the baddest of the bad in terms of LOCK bounties, the Level Reds. Most speculate they are put to death or tortured here, although, interestingly, it's not a huge subject of conversation. What truly goes on is a bit of a mystery, as only LOCK personnel and guards (and the captured bounties) are ever allowed in.
LOCK Radio
noun
It's the only radio station you're gonna get, post-O31. Many people have a love/hate relationship with LOCK radio, which is used to broadcast the new wanted criminals for the bounty hunters, and is played at every check-in station as well as any other areas with electricity or a way to pick up a radio signal. The snarky DJ's, Clive Wick and Wes Beauregard, will banter back and forth about the daily depressions, the bounty list, and then perhaps even play some records if they have nothing else useful to say.

This is a term for a heavy exposive made by the Evolutionaries that is discharged into the Sanctuary to try and cause cave-ins or otherwise herd and round up the inhabitants inside.

Nonpareil
location
On the very edge of Dragtown, beyond the crumbling slums and disorganized street war, is a place that more seems to belong on the glitzy streets of some faraway haven - the Nonpareil. Run by the insane and mysterious Mr. Sweet, this whorehouse sometimes has problems when raucous competition comes calling in attempts to steal the high-class hookers, just another reason why slum-life is no picnic. This infamous bordello houses twenty-five of the finest and best-kept prostitutes the city has to offer, all with ranging appearances and talents for even the pickiest of consumers. It includes a floor act for those stuck in long lines, specially furnished and stocked rooms, even its own high-class security to protect both dames and visitors alike from anyone with bad intentions. Nonpareil is the map-marker for Dragtown, attracting customers from near and far.
O
O31
noun
O31 is the term used to describe the power-outage and following blasts that plunged the world into darkness and disarray fifteen years ago. It's derived from the month, October, and the day, the 31st, more famously known as Halloween. It can be pronounced either oh-three-one (most commonly) or oh-thirty-one, usually by older residents. Oh-three-one is considered the "hipper" slang.
OB/Obie
location
The only link between San Francisco and the mainland is the former Oakland Bay Bridge, now known simply as the OB, or Obie. The bottom half of the bridge is completely useless as it cuts off at Treasure Island, so only the top road can be used. It is normally overrun by copy-cats ready to overtake an inexperienced transporter.
Overseer
occupation
Just above the working class, there are those that make sure the factories and other shops run in good order. Don't be fooled, though, these men and women are only one rung ahead of the rest. Rather than slaving away on the lower levels of the workplace, or dirtying their hands in the back, they have to deal with the entirely different beast of upper management - the underhanded, and enigmatic so-called 'leaders' of the Los Angeles community. They may receive a healthier paycheck for their endeavors, some of which even force them to help out with the workload once in a while, but it's rare that the extra pocket change is worth the abuse. It's not uncommon to see overseers replaced after mysterious disappearances or unpredictable 'work-related accidents'. Some have even been deemed as Level Orange or Red bounties after a while for attempting to sabotage the factories or harm workers.
P
Pacifist
noun
In every society, there always must be those that find their own way to rebel against the norm. In this new world, these people are the pacifists. Gathered almost exclusively inside the Sanctuary, they refuse to do any kind of work that might aid the outside world in their violent pursuits. Rather than work for money to buy things, they are completely self-sufficient, grow their own foods, process their own needed amenities, and act very much so as a 1970's style commune. The only thing they cannot provide is protection, something that is given to them by vigilantes who don't wish to see them slaughtered without so much as lifting a hand in their own defense. The Sanctuary Guard has actually benefitted greatly from helping the pacifists, as these handy citizens provide all of their food, clothing and other special equipment, such as gun harnessing, body armour, and other shoddy-looking but highly-effective supplies.
Pedestrian
slang
This is any person who is harmed in the undertaking of a bounty or other personal vendetta who really had nothing to do with it. An unfortunate bystander.

slang

Prostitute
occupation
This is the bulk of the female 'working class'. A staggering sixty percent of all women in the city are prostitutes, or for the extremely sheltered, someone who exchanges sexual favors for money. An even more frightening ninety-five percent of all younger women are as such. There are then four percent of those women who are either married to someone in a position of power, or in a position of power themselves. The other almost crazed one percent falls on young women struggling to make an honest living themselves, as opposed to the roughly forty percent of older women who are either bounty-hunting or working. Usually, the good looks of a prostitute are in direct relationship to her placement, ranging from a dumpy shack nestled in smoggy factory territory, or in a plush brothel brimming with sensual undertones, as to be expected.

S
Sanctuary
location
The old BART tunnels running under the city have now become the only refuge for those who choose not to reap the benefits of this new world, and yearn to experience what even their previous existence could not provide. These underground stations have become a society for pacifists, and the only organized area of its kind in San Francisco. A small society held together by only the will-power of its inhabitants, this often-sieged little corner of catastrophe often needs help. Hundreds have taken the various open stations as their surrogate homes, as well as further areas of the tunnels for even more extreme members of the area. Aside from strictly moraled religious groups, there are even some who have gone so far as to completely isolate themselves from even other Sanctuary residents, believing the human race should just throw in the proverbial towel, stop breeding, and die off in peace. A center for missing persons (including children orphaned either by O31 itself, or some other tragedy following it) are included in the grounds, as well as stations specifically set up for hording food and other valued supplies - all of which are grown or otherwise produced by the residents themselves. It is also one of the few places with a fully functional hospital, that will put aside differences with outsiders to treat anyone.
Sanctuary Guard
noun
Above ground at any entrance into the BART tunnels, there is an adjacent community which does not believe in pacifism. However, they put this differing morality to good use, as they call themselves the Sanctuary Guard. Mostly vigilantes and bleeding hearts with a tough edge, these rag-tag gun-toters rally together to shoot down anyone attempting to intrude on the peaceful Sanctuary. They are heavily helped by the residents below, who provide them anything they need, a smart move as thieves looking to take over the semi-fruitful underground gardens inside are plentiful, as well as extremist religious cults outside of the Sanctuary walls. Thanks to a deal made with the Factory District in which the Guard will come to their aid should they ever need it, they also get very cheap ammunition and weaponry. The leader of the Guard - or Captain as he is referred to - is Warren Bolt, although he was not the founder. The Sanctuary Guard was first started by a woman named Louisa Hunter thirteen years ago. She has since disappeared, leaving the entire operation to Bolt.
Sandwich
noun
This is a popular form of food in post-O31 times, generally nothing more than a strip of dried meat (turkey or chicken, usually) set across a rations cracker.
Slum Market
location
Contained within the middle of Dragtown, the Slum Market is akin to a street-wide pawn shop. Varying goods, some of which may have been obtained through questionable means, are laid out on ratty blankets for cheap consummation by a shady public. However, the smart bounty hunter knows this is the place to go to get well-priced ammo. Rule of thumb: guns from the Wharf, ammo from the slum market.
Station Dame
slang
A deragotory term used from one bounty hunter to another to insinuate all they do is hang around the check-in stations attempting to look important.
Sutro Tower
location
A nearly thousand-foot tall transmitting tower jutting up out of the center of San Francisco, which is used to broadcast LOCK radio. It is also the base for the aforementioned radio broadcast team, and is heavily guarded to keep secure.

slang

Teller
occupation
At any check-in station, there must, of course, be someone there to run it. The person who keeps LOCK radio playing and accepts the bounty turn-ins at the front counter is known as the teller. They also oversee the back cell and keep unruly prisoners disciplined until someone can come to pick them up and take them to the LOCK compound. They are heavily armed, highly dangerous, and can summon back up in an instant, but that doesn't mean they still aren't victims of attempted robbery very often, as they have a large supply of card to award successful hunters. However, it's very rare that a robbery is successful with the force they'll have to face from a seasoned teller.
see also Warden
Transporter
occupation
Getting goods from the mainland to the city is a dangerous job. Bereft with copy-cats ready to gun you down and take the supplies for themselves, either for personal use or their own resale, it's no surprise that there are very few surviving transporters in the area. Their job is to drive or otherwise manuever across the Obie to the mainland, pick up the supplies and necessities to go back into the city, and then drive back across and avoid being gunned down. Very few have a vehicle in the first place due to the difficulty of receiving gas (something LOCK can provide you at a high price on the mainland outpost)

Turkwest
location
This location, to the far East of the city, is the most dangerous of all. Heavily hit by the bombings of O31, the streets are broken-down tombs and hide-aways for criminals and murderers, and the areas branching out into Golden Gate Park are overrun by weeds and other overgrowth, making it a difficult thicket of deserted buildings and abandoned museums. Many hole up in this area when on the run from LOCK, and desperate people oftentimes do desperate things. Bodies of bounty hunters and the convicted alike line the gutters of this area, and only the bravest go in... sometimes never to come out again.

Vigilante
occupation
A vigilante is a very far throw from a bounty hunter. While yes, they will occasionally catch or even kill someone, they only do so in some kind of sense of justice. They will rarely accept payment for their actions, and therefore are commonly also a factory worker or some other kind of side position to pay the cost of living. Some more famous groups of vigilantes include the Sanctuary Guard.

Yellow Jacket
noun
Situated in Dragtown, the Yellow Jackets are one of very few gangs to get any recognition, although not necessarily for their formidability. It is more for their numbers, as they are numerous enough to be seen in droves and small groups wandering the streets attempting to rile up unrest. Their origins are actually a few rogue bounty hunters who grew sick of cow-towing to LOCK, or any government at all, really, and thus are anarchists at heart. They will attempt to steal from any merchant they can to delegitimize the use of card, but hence have not had very fruitful efforts as they are incredibly disorganized, which figures seeing as they are essentially people who do not believe in organization. Their ranks contain everyone from disgruntled factory workers, to disenfranchised youth, to former LOCK compound prisoners who are now looking for a free ride, which is easy considering the community feel of the Yellow Jackets, one of its few boons. Members do at least stick together.
